Hiking Trails

Hiking at Just Bee Retreat is a favourite activity with everyone. Our ethos is to take nothing but photographs and to leave nothing but footsteps. The trails are maintained and varied, offering gentle strolls in the valley to more vigorous climbs up the mountains. The natural fauna and flora is exciting with tracks and droppings as evidence of the rich variety of wild animals that live here. The BLUE hiking trail is an easy walk of about 4km along the contours of the valley to the north taking one through a variety of environments. There are river crossings, forest paths, Waterlily Dam and the wetland dam where abundant water birds can be seen. One joins the road which bypasses the pecan nut orchard planted in 2007, the kraals and the old farm school building. The cows, goats and chickens belong to the people who live on the farm and play an important role in their typical pastoral life. The ORANGE trail is another easy hike about 3km along the contours of the valley to the south where it crosses the river at the weir and then winds along the base of the mountain. It is awe inspiring to look up and see the mountains towering above and the views are impressive. The GREEN trail is about 8km long and meanders to the top of the eastern mountains in and out of the gorges with magnificent views and a surprising diversity of vegetation. On reaching the top one is humbled when looking round from this bird’s eye vantage point with the valleys below and the town of Dullstroom across the way. It is sensible to wear good, suitable shoes when hiking and to take a day-back-pack with drinking water, snacks, sun cream, binoculars and camera with you (as a bare minimum) and in the rainy weather remember your raincoat.
